June - September: Atlantic Crossing from Norfolk, Virginia via Bermuda and The Azores. A month cruising the Azorean Islands before our European landfall in Lisbon, Portugal. Coastal cruising through Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean. We left DOVKA for the winter, in Benelmadena, Costa del Sol, Spain.
2001
April - September: Cruising along the Spanish coast to The Balearic
Islands - Formentera, Ibiza, Majorca and Minorca. Two night passage to Sardinia;
up to Corsica; back to Sardinia, overnight passage to Tunisia; overnight passage
to Sicily; cruising along the north coast; Lipari (Aeolian) Islands; west
coast of Italy; Capri, Ventotene Islands and storage ashore for the winter
in Gaeta, Italy, halfway between Rome and Naples.
2002
April - May: Sailing down the coast of Italy to Sicily; two night
passage to cruise the Ionian Islands - landfall Zykinthos, then Lefkas, Ithaca,
Kefallonia, and Meganisi . Passage through the Gulf of Corinth and the Corinth
Canal to the Saronic Sea on to Cape Sounion and the Northern Cyclades.
June - July: Cruising
the Cyclades and the Dodeconese : Kithnos, Syros, Paros, Skhinousa, Amorgas,
Levitha, Patmos, Arki, Samos, Leros, Kos and Simi.
August - October:
Sailing along the Southwest corner of Turkey from the Datca Peninsula to Marmaris,
Gocek Bay, Kalkan, Kas and Kekova Roads. Made our base Marmaris and explored
west and east from there.
2003
May - October: Another season
in Turkey with our base still in Marmaris enabling us to more fully explore
the Aegean Turkish Coast from Kusadasi to Marmaris and east. This is a coast
of peninsulas, large gulfs and many beautiful anchorages . The season was
punctuated by a brief trip home in late June, followed by a month of visiting
friends in western Europe.
2004
May - June: Farewell to Turkey, afer spending the month of May visiting favorite anchorages. Early June, traversing Greece, including the Aegean, Gulf of Corinth and the Ionian Islands to Corfu.
July - September:
Across
the Adriatic, from Corfu to Brindisi, Italy (to avoid the Albanian coast)
and then back to Dubrovnik. July and half of August, cruising up the Dalmatian
coast of Croatia with its thousands of islands to the Slovenian border. Late
August and September, again crisscrossing the Adriatic with stops in Venice
& Monfalcone in Italy, back to Croatia and Piran,Slovenia. Overland travel
to Tuscany, Slovenia
and Trieste.
2005
May - September:
Another season spent along the Croatian coast, getting to know the islands
and mainland in greater depth than in 2004.
The season began and ended in Monfalcone,
Italy and included stops in Slovenia enroute to and from Croatia.
2006
May - July: Another winter ashore in Monfalcone Italy. In early May we set off with our friend Fil, and son Jon and his classmate Josh to Venice and then on to the Croatian coast to visit our favorite anchorages before the crowds of charter boats arrived. From Vis, we jumped across the Adriatic to Brindisi, Italy and then back across to Corfu, Greece. We then flew home for ten days to attend Jon's graduation from medical school. After returning to DOVKA we sailed again through the Corinth canal and north to the lovely Sporades Islands and the Khalkidiki region of northern Greece. The cruising season ended with a BANG when we suffered a head-on collision while touring ashore.
September: Three months after the collision, Sid was sufficiently recovered to move DOVKA, with the help of two friends, to Ayvalik, Turkey for the winter.
2007
May - September: Sailed from Ayvalik, along the Turkish Aegean coast to Marmaris where much of the season was occupied with replacing DOVKA's teak deck. The remainder of the time was occupied with cruising locally in the Marmaris region.
October - November: We crewed on the 65 foot cutter, VAN DIEMEN III, on the 2,000 mile journey from Fiji to Sydney Australia, with stops in Noumea, New Caledonia and Lord Howe Island.
2008
May - August: Sailed
from Marmaris, along the Turkish coast to Finike via Gocek and Fethiye. From
Finike we sailed directly to Israel where we based ourselves in the marina
in Herzliya while we explored the country. In late July, we sailed back to
Kekova Roads,Turkey with a brief layover in south western Cyprus.
September: DOVKA returned to the USA directly from Marmaris aboard the M/V EXPLORER, a ship designed specifically for the transport of yachts. She arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on September 27. We then sailed her 100 miles north to Fort Pierce, Florida for winter storage ashore.
2009
March - April: DOVKA launched in Ft. Pierce and transited the Intra-Coastal Waterway to Fort Lauderdale before crossing to the Bahamas for a leisurely month of cruising.
April - May: DOVKA made a fast 500 mile passage from Marsh Harbor, Abaco Island to Beaufort, N.C. and thence up the ICW, via the Dismal Swamp Canal, to the Chesapeake Bay
